On August 1st, we celebrate Colorado Day...the anniversary of the day our beautiful state officially became the 38th state in the U.S. back in 1876. That’s right, Colorado earned its nickname The Centennial State because it joined the Union 100 years after the Declaration of Independence was signed.
Whether you're a native or a proud transplant, there's no denying it: we're lucky to live in Colorado. From snow-capped mountains and desert canyons to hot springs and craft breweries, Colorado has a little something for everyone. In honor of our state's big day, here are some fun facts and reasons to love life in the 303 (and 720… and 970… and 719… you get the idea π):
π We’re home to more than 50 “fourteeners”
Colorado has 58 mountain peaks over 14,000 feet, more than any other state! Whether you're a seasoned hiker or just like to admire them from below, those views never get old.
π Rocky Mountain High
No, really. Our state capital, Denver, sits exactly one mile above sea level. Hence the nickname “The Mile High City.”
Wildlife is Wild
From moose and mountain lions to bighorn sheep and black bears, our state is crawling (sometimes literally) with wildlife. Even our state animal, the Rocky Mountain bighorn sheep, is a total icon.
π We have sand dunes that look like another planet
The Great Sand Dunes National Park is home to the tallest dunes in North America. Yes, you can sled down them. Yes, it’s epic.
πΊ Colorado is the craft beer capital of the country
With over 400 craft breweries, we’re not just high altitude, we’re high quality hops.
β· Winter wonderland goals
Colorado boasts 28 ski areas, from world-famous Aspen and Vail to family favorites like Eldora and Monarch. Snow days hit differently here.
π Hot springs heaven
Looking to soak your worries away? Colorado is bubbling with hot springs, like Glenwood, Strawberry Park, and Mount Princeton.
π‘ Bonus fun fact: The cheeseburger was trademarked in Denver in 1935. You’re welcome, America.
So whether you were born and raised in Colorado or chose to make it your home, this place has a way of getting into your soul. Here's to big skies, bigger adventures, and the best state birthday celebration ever.
Happy Colorado Day, Mac KID families! Now go eat a cheeseburger on a mountaintop or something.
